Did you know that one of opera’s most famous arias, Una furtiva lacrima, was composed by Gaetano Donizetti, who saw the light in Bergamo and is buried here?
Hop aboard a TukTuk that will retrace all the places that served as the backdrop to the great Maestro’s beginnings, starting with the theater dedicated to him in Città Bassa, and then discovering the house where he was born, in that Borgo Canale that was also an inspiration to other musicians and organists of international stature.
Walking along the charming Via Arena, we will reach the place where the young Gaetano took his first music lessons, just a few steps away from the building that in later years became the Bergamo Conservatory.
The visit cannot fail to include a stop at the splendid Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, which houses the funerary monuments of Donizetti and the Maestro di Cappella Simon Mayr, his first admirer.
Of course, you’ll also admire the other splendid buildings that make up the monumental center of Bergamo, located in the area between Piazza Vecchia and Piazza Duomo: the Colleoni Chapel, the Baptistery, St. Alexander’s Cathedral, the Palazzo della Ragione, and the Contarini fountain-a concentration of art, architecture, and history in the space of a few meters.
At the end of the visit you will return to Città Bassa by walking along Viale delle Mura, from which there is a wonderful view of the plain, and Viale Vittorio Emanuele II, the ancient Via Ferdinandea.
